Improvised Incendiary Device (IID) Recognition Course
The Improvised Incendiary Device (IID) Recognition Course teaches the student how to identify incendiary components and incendiary devices at security screening checkpoints. Detecting IIDs is a critical part of any security screener’s responsibility. IIDs can be created using common household items purchased from any hardware, grocery, or department store. Their design is limited only by the skill and creativity of its maker. IIDs are very dangerous because they generate intense heat, smoke, and fire when detonated. Training is the most important element in effective detection of IIDs. This training course examines the dangers posed by Improvised Incendiary Devices, provides essential instruction on basic IID components, and identifies how the screening process aids in the detection of IIDs and IID components.
Introduction to IIDs - Teaches the characteristics and destructive nature of IIDs. The student will learn about historical events that demonstrate the need for IID detection.
Components of an Improvised Incendiary Device (IID) - Teaches the student about the three main components of an incendiary device, what types of materials are used for each component, and how each component can be combined to create an IID.
Detection of an IID - Teaches the student about several screening methodologies used to detect IIDs. Each student will also learn tips on how to detect IIDs.
X-ray Detection of IIDs - Provides the student with an opportunity to examine X-ray cabinet and backscatter X-ray images of IIDs.
IID Identification - Teaches common concealment techniques for IIDs and IID components hidden in bags, carry-on luggage, and cargo packages.
