Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Recognition Course

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Recognition Course teaches the student how to identify explosives and explosive devices at security checkpoints. World-wide terrorist activities have increased dramatically. One of the terrorists’ weapon of choice is the IED. Detecting IEDs is a critical part of any security screener’s responsibility. Training is the most important element in effective detection of IEDs. This training course examines the dangers posed by Improvised Explosive Devices, provides essential instruction on basic IED components, and identifies how the screening process aids in the detection of IEDs and IED components.

Key Features

  • Standardized instruction
  • Identification of IED components: power sources, initiators, explosives, and switches
  • Identification of low, high, solid, plastic, and liquid explosives used in IEDs
  • Identification of screening methodologies used to aid in the detection of IEDs and IED components
  • Identification of concealment techniques use to smuggle IEDs past a security checkpoint

Key Benefits

  • Standardized - Each student interacts with the same training content and must achieve the same minimum passing grades. This ensures each student is trained to the same standard and is prepared to carry out his responsibilities.
  • Practical – Safe and effective way for the student to practice identifying IEDs and IED components.
  • Comprehensive – The training identifies the various methodologies used to detect IEDs and prepares the student to recognize hidden IEDs and IED components.
  • Self-paced – Each student can work through the training at his own pace. Custom remedial instruction is used to provide the right amount of training at the right time.

Course Topics

Introduction to IEDs - Teaches the characteristics and destructive nature of explosive devices. The student will learn about historical events that demonstrate the need for IED detection.

Components of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) - Teaches the student about the four main components of an explosive device, what the components look like, and how each component can be combined to create an IED.

Detection of an IED - Teaches the student about several screening methodologies used to detect IEDs. Each student will also learn tips on how to detect IEDs.

X-ray Detection of IEDs - Provides the student with an opportunity to examine cabinet X-ray and backscatter X-ray images of IEDs.

IED Identification - Teaches common concealment techniques for IEDs and IED components hidden in bags, carry-on luggage, and cargo packages.
